“The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider\'s web. Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973)”

Stephen Althouse

Born Washington, D.C. 1948

Artist-photographer Stephen Althouse combines found or fabricated objects into cryptic assemblages, which he then photographs using large format film.  Althouse uses recurring images with autobiographical narrative themes to create a unique enigmatic visual language of personal symbols and metaphors.

Althouse lived in Miami, Florida, for 30 years where he was Professor and then Chairman of Fine Arts at Barry University.  He has recently moved back to central Pennsylvania.  He continues to teach in Paris, London, Madrid, and South America.

In addition to being widely exhibited and the recipient of numerous awards, his artwork has been extensively collected by over fifty major museums as well as private collectors throughout North America, South America, and Europe.
