Matthew Choberka

Matthew Choberka

Born Peoria, Illinois 1969

Matthew earned his BFA from Columbia College in Chicago in 1993, followed by studies in painting and sculpture at the New York Studio School from until 1997.  He then spent a year in Berlin, Germany, at Hochschule der Kunste before earning  his MFA in Painting from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana in 2005.

Choberka’s current work is focused on abstract cityscapes and interiors – essentially contemporary history paintings – depicting our world as a place constantly at war with itself.  In the paintings, he confronts both his identification with humanity, and his (sometime) dissatisfaction with it.   Above all, he seeks to create a truthful image.  All of the elemental forces of painting – form, color, structure, and space – are in service to this aim.  Most importantly, he wants the painting to be, in a very real sense, alive.

Matthew has received many awards and grants and his work has been shown in many solo and group exhibitions.  He is presently on the faculty in the Department of Visual Arts at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.
